In 2007, Padrón created the Family Reserve series of cigars as special items to be given out at private events where a member of the Padrón family — often legendary Padrón founder José Orlando Padrón or one of his two sons, Jorge and Orlando — was present. The following year, this edition — the No. 44 — was produced to celebrate the company’s 44th birthday.
Eventually, after strong customer demand, Padrón released this cigar series to the public in limited quantities. Featuring the oldest Nicaraguan wrapper, binder and filler tobaccos in Padrón’s inventory (aged as long as 10 years), the Family Reserve sticks are exceptional, with each possessing its own unique character.
This box-pressed, Figurado-sized cigar features a tapered torpedo head, which concentrates and magnifies the flavors inside, all of which are refined, dynamic and rich, without being heavy or overpowering. In the Natural variation, this medium-bodied, medium-to-full-strength, highly complex and delicious smoke offers up savory, meaty essences of almond, African coffee beans, nuts, spices, vanilla and floral notes. These are on top of a bold, woody core, with Padrón’s signature traces of sweet cocoa gently poking their way through. The draw of the No. 44 Natural is lush, and the burn is dead-even and razor-sharp.
Cigar Aficionado ranked this stick fourth in their Top 25 list for 2018, rating it 95 for the second time in a decade.
