Even though Drew Estate has been regularly releasing vitolas of its Liga Privada H99 family of smokes, a persistent demand from the company’s ardent fanbase was for a “Super Ancho” (Spanish for “Super Wide”) variant of this fervidly sought-after line.
So, in 2023, the company finally gave in and produced a six-inch, 60-ring-gauge Nicaraguan-made gordo comprised of an H99 hybrid Connecticut Corojo-and-stalk-cut Habano wrapper, a Mexican San Andrés Otapan Negro Último Corte binder, and Honduran, Nicaraguan, and Pennsylvania Green River One Sucker filler tobaccos that have made this blend legendary among cigar lovers.
According to Drew Estate founder and president Jonathan Drew, the H99 Super Ancho is both “super-complex” and “absolutely perfect” and is therefore worthy of “exploration by the dudes and dudettes who typically smoke smaller rings — even those who [normally] smoke lanceros.”
Full-bodied and commandingly strong, the Super Ancho provides a powerful and intensely flavorful smoking experience that’s spicy, peppery, and chocolatey, with notes of earth, leather, straw, bread, and espresso. The smoke is dense, the construction is imposing, and the draw is superb until the very end. Available in boxes of 24, this is a formidable and serious cigar that’s good for a two-and-a-half-hour smoke, hopefully after a particularly rewarding or fruitful day.
